As I jog around the field, following my teammate in front of me like a baby duck follows its mother, I prepare my mindset for the game. As a forward, I must be on top of my game so I can whiz around the defenders and launch the ball into the back of the net with a swoosh. Ever since I can remember, forward has always been my position, and I have always had an attacking mindset. Little did I know, the game today would completely change my mindset for the rest of my soccer career.
I start the game as a forward, like usual. I battle the defenders on the other team for the ball, jabbing them with my elbows, and steering them to one side so they cannot escape, like an animal trapping its prey. As they squirm in front of me, I snatch the ball from their feet. Immediately, I race towards the goal, the defenders chasing after me like zombies in a horror movie. Adrenaline pumps through my blood sending a tingling sensation throughout my body as I get closer and closer to the goal. My foot swings back like a club as I go to take the shot, and it hits the ball with a loud “whack.”
Unfortunately, the goalkeeper anticipates my shot and moves swiftly to catch it. A few moments later, I hear the soft blow of the referee’s whistle and my teammate rushes onto the field yelling my name: “Erin! Erin! Erin!” As I …show more content…

Instead of fighting the other team’s defenders, I fight their quick and clever forwards. My body serves as a barrier between them and the goal, as I push them back as they try to get past me. I sweep the ball from under their feet as they approach me and dribble up the field, my legs carrying me like the wind. I catch a glimpse of one of my teammates out of the corner of my eye and quickly loft the ball into the air, watching it as it soars through the sky, and then lands at the foot of my teammate.
