By reading “How to Read Literature like a Professor” and “The Kite Runner”, the reader is aided in his or her ability to understand the true meanings behind the text. One is able to decipher how the act of coming together to eat can mean anything from a simple meal with family, to an uncomfortable situation that leads to anger or stress in an individual character. The reader is able to understand the use of rain or other weather in a novel to transform the mood and tone of scene, or understand the cleansing or destructive qualities that weather may have on the overall plot of the story. The use of illness can be transformed, as it can lead to the reader discovering veiled means behind tuberculosis, cholera, a simple cold, or even cancers such
Many times when reading, whether it be a newspaper, magazine article, an essay or a piece of literature crafted by greats such as Harper Lee, George Orwell and J.K Rowling you may have the “temptation to speed up” (355); Only because you have “so much more reading ahead of you” (355), but on the contrary the author of What Words Can Tell Francine Prose explains that “In fact it’s essential to slow down and read every word”(355). It is very critical that you analyze everything you read because in order for you to fully understand the subject at hand you must pick every word apart and thoroughly understand the meaning of each word. Francine Prose does this by using a technique called “close reading”. Prose believes that “Close reading” is extremely important and shows us how this is done by explaining a
Showing his readers how true revolutions are made and how they are able to change something within society cultivates a restlessness that can sway readers to his point and possibly even push them to start taking on a problem they see in the
Example from the reading I find meaningful during this unit is the example from chapter of Steele reading about over-efforting. Over-effort deliver a powerful meaning to me because it really shows me that working twice as hard on something is not going to help me if I not learning it correctly. These reading has deepen and expand my thinking about identity, stereotype threat, individual success, and the power of changing the environment. It has shown me that racial segregation has ended but discrimination against one another still remain, just in a different form. We as a society are ignoring that the fact that their still prejudiced against one and another identity which led to stereotype threat.
I have been doing some thinking about our conversation a few days ago and have concluded that I will take you up on the offer! I just sold my old bike and now have some money left over that I can use to pay for those seminars. I am going to see how soon I can get this done, I am going to look at the dates and send my form in. I will keep you posted on the status of things as they get processed.
Goal Number One I didn’t know it yet, but the way I viewed the game of lacrosse was about to change drastically. It was a normal day for me. I was in eighth grade, and I was getting ready for school.
My five signature themes were: Achiever- As an Achiever, “No matter how much you may feel you deserve a day of rest, if the day passes without some form of achievement, no matter how small, you will feel dissatisfied.†Sometimes people call me an overachiever, but that is how I feel is my normal. Harmony- I do not like when people argue because I feel there is a better way for everyone to get along. Once everyone is in harmony, life is much smoother. Input-
Lani: I was helping for someone’s project for COMM 245; I was in the video lab, in the studio. I was on campus and decided to contact everyone I knew who comes to the school. I remember I sent out a snap saying guys I think there is a shooting, be careful and then I started sending out individual texts to people making sure they were okay, like hey are you good? Stay out of an area.
George Orwell’s 1984 provides a very bleak and dreary look at a future in a world where societal norms and social cues are the main source of life. Constructivism is everywhere in this novel; from the language they speak to the relationships they develop. Everything is predetermined by the government, or “Big Brother '' and those who refuse to conform are viewed as threats and sent away to be re-educated. Many of constructivism’s main points are demonstrated throughout the novel, especially the value of societal norms, the need for structure and order, and interests of the state.
My strength as a writer seems to be the flow of my paper, finding good citations to support my argument, and writing in a clear manner. I still need to work on floating quotes, word choice, and synthesizing along with clarifying who said certain quotes. I am also working on scheduling more than enough time to write and perfect my essays because as much as I think I have allowed myself enough time I feel like the time is never enough.
My strengths as a writer are being able to come up with a lot of interesting topics and getting it on paper but I have challenges when it comes to organizing my paper and trying to tie all the topics together. Based on the feedback from my papers I would say there are many areas I need to work on for example grammar, punctuation and spelling. For me, it is many areas that I need to work on like grammar and spelling I have always had some complications when it came to those two things so I really try to make sure I continue to work on it. To improve my skills, I am going to take advantage of the Grand Canyon Universities writing center and also the tutoring center this will be beneficial to me because it will help me get stronger in my writing and to also get more feedback that will help me grow even more in the areas that I struggle in.
The reader would be able to develop standpoints that are very contrasting from
I have learned so much about writing in the last few months. I have gained confidence in my writing because of the many peer reviews and working drafts. One of my goals is to never settle for “okay”, to keep striving to be better. Once I am happy with how I did in something, I tend to become complacent. I do not want that to happen in my essays.
A sense of accomplishment is invaluable to a person. Not only does a sense of accomplishment build confidence and faith in oneself, but it also allows one to reflect on how wonderful the journey to the accomplishment was, and how every little struggle and triumph was worth it. In the middle of summer, where time seems endless and the stress of the previous school year has been shed by students, I never expected to find out that I scored a five on both of the advanced placement exams I took. Nor did I have one-hundred percent confidence the goals we set as section leaders of the marching band would actually be met. Yet to my surprise, I had the good fortune of accomplishing challenging things in both aspects of my life.
