My Michigan Hero I want you to think of someone special, to think of a hero. When I think of a hero I think of my dad. I remember when I was younger, and I didn’t like to read. My dad taught me just how amazing reading is.
One night, during the cold winter, I walked along the side walk to reach the local store down the block. As I walked out, before I can realize it, I was dropping down onto the concrete while bullets swiftly passed me. I then began to run back home, but I wanted to keep running. Away from Chicago, away from the west side. Growing up in Chicago, it was easy to assume that there was nothing different beyond the blocks of my streets.
The Mackinac Express “I’m so bored, Dad.” I groaned. I slumped against the boathouse wall. Even though I typically hate boats, I vividly recall being so irritated that the ferry hadn’t come yet. I was at Star Line 's boathouse on Mackinac Island, and we had been waiting for at least 20 minutes for a ferry.
I 'm a laid back guy, who enjoys spending time with my friends, trying new things, and meeting new people. I love living in the city since there 's always something to do. I 'm an engineer and enjoy my job and its challenges; but, I spend all day in an office and by the end of the day I 'd rather go out and have some fun than go straight home and call it a night. I 'm from a military family, so I grew up overseas and lived in the mid-west after college; but I 've always call Maryland home. I love adventures, city life, the Ravens, concerts & festivals, and just hanging out with friends - since it’s more about the company than the event, I’m typically up for anything.
Getting down to Nebraska was harsh and the trail was dusty. The children like me had to take care of the animals. Jim, Antonia and myself became really good friends after living next door to each other for a while and we do everything together. When I work, I help my dad to plant and harvest crops and hunt for food. We planted and harvested corn, potatoes, pumpkin, wheat, peas, carrots and tomatoes.
It’s about six hours since you left for Arizona . The way things have been, I know you wouldn’t have expected me to come to see you off. I was so focused on getting by on my own in the city, I didn’t realize how much I missed being with friends. And it was only today I realized how much I’ve missed you. You were my best friend for as long as I can remember, and it’s been almost two weeks since I last talked to you.
I have lived in East Oakland my whole life. To the majority of people, the mention of East Oakland evokes thoughts of violence, shootings, and gangs. I was one of the people who believed in these stereotypes, and for a particularly long time. I was one of the people who saw Oakland as a wasteland, a place with nothing to offer me, and a place I had nothing to offer to.
I grew up in inner city Baltimore Maryland. Neither of my parents were or are followers of Christ. They divorced when I was very young. I spent most of my life moving from place to place with my mother and two brothers. I gave up on high school when I failed my freshmen year.
The event that marked my transition from childhood to adulthood was moving from Indiana to California after my sophomore year. Leaving everything behind strengthened my determination to succeed, sharpened my goals for the future, and sparked my passion for environmental sciences. Aside from being a major transition point, it is also a vital part of my background. Initially I really struggled to adjust to my new surroundings, although I eventually grew into the confident young adult that I am today: eager to show the world what I am capable of. Growing up in a small community, and having a devoted loving family, I had created a niche for myself.
My home state is Texas, and a problem Texas faces is an overall mindset of systemic racism, sexism, and xenophobia. Texas is a very conservative state, thus many of the policies passed by our legislation are written at the expense of women and minorities. Although I might sound highly critical of our state government, I do not believe that these negative mindsets are deliberate attempts to put others down, I feel that it is simply an ignorance to the issues women and minorities face, and a lack of empathy. Ignorance is easily countered by thorough education. The easiest way to solve this is for us constituents of these politicians, to bring the issues that affect us to the forefront.
On a foggy, fall morning sand filled the air which was no different from any other day in Oklahoma. There was no sign of sunlight for many miles. Houses that my friends once lived in were demolished by tractors, hoping mine wouldn’t be next. Unfortunately, soon it would be demolished. My friends have left their houses and moved to open land because of the Great Depression.
“ Watch Out!”, my pa yelled as a tree fell down. That is how most of my family’s trip was in 1855 when we traveled from Pennsylvania to Illinois for free land. Hi i’m Bill. I have one brother a mom and a dad. My mom has blond hair, short, and brown eyes.
Spanish was my first language and neither one of my parents knew english. I would go to school and just listen and try to learn every little thing I could get my hands
The chilly September air, hits my face as I look to the approaching dock. We are arriving in Grafton, Illinois. I run my hands through my inky black hair, breathing in the smell of the polluted air, the river water, and what seems to be dead fish. But I don’t wrinkle my nose as many of the passengers do, I am a sailor and this is my life. As we dock, I help with the ropes, tying the knots as my father taught me.
“Hear ye! Hear ye! All rise for the Court is now open and in session.” These are the words I heard before walking into the Michigan Supreme Court as a Justice. My black judge’s robe billowed gallantly behind me as I walked down the center aisle of the court room along with my other fellow justices to the bench.
