The purpose of this paper is to explore the concepts of social identity and social location as well as the questions about the importance of awareness of one 's own worldview and social position. It also provides an outline of social and cultural experiences, values, beliefs, behaviors, and attitudes that help shape and determine one 's social identity. This is particularly important to me, as I have begun to see a framework emerging from my own personal learning and questioning about social identity and my place in society.
I have blond hair and pale skin. On the color wheel, my father is a rich mocha, my sister is a warm copper, and my mother is a perfectly tanned caramel; I am somewhere between cream and eggshell on the opposite end of the spectrum. Being stereotypically white can be difficult when you’re African American. The beginning of high school was when I first began to feel that my fair complexion hid my true identity.
“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin, and culture is like a tree without roots” -Marcus Garvey . And like a tree without roots, a person without culture will fail in a world so full of it. At every turn we can find a piece of culture, whether it is an American store, some recognizable logo, or even the signs were so used to seeing on the road. Culture is everywhere. You might be American, Russian, Columbian or a combination of the three,but it is always necessity for you to know where your roots are.
What if one day you 're sitting in the park and a little kid 5 or 6 years old, came up to you and asked you. What 's your cultural identity?; and just walked away. It makes you wonder how does this little fella know what 's cultural identity is? Then imagine, realizing that you may not know or have one. I am Christian Jimenez a latin American student in western.
As a person goes through life he or she may wonder “Who am I?” and “What is my purpose?” The objective of this paper is to allow me to reflect and critically analyze who I am as a person. In this paper, I will discuss my social location and identity, my life experiences and my privileges and disadvantages.
My salient identity is being Asian with parents that are immigrants, and are also in the lower middle class category. Being Asian to me falls into the conflict theory. The conflict theory to me is if you are poor, you have less resources to climb into the next wealth class. My parents showed me that you don't need much to help yourself. Sometimes it can be good to be Asian, more is expected out of you when it comes to your parents, and it can really motivate you to do better.
Being Vietnamese-American, my sense of cultural identity greatly differs from many individuals. Since America is one great, giant mixing pot of many diverse cultures, I was exposed to a multitude of different cultural perspectives growing up. With my Vietnamese background and American upbringing influencing who I am today, it shapes my own unique cultural identity as well. It’s rare, if not completely impossible, to find a person who has the same exact cultural identity as you. And because my parents were raised in Vietnam while I was raised here in Oahu, our cultural perspectives aren’t very similar even though we’re closely related.
Here recent, I got asked, “What is your cultural identity?” To be honest with you, I was stumped for a while; finally, things got a little clearer. Your cultural identity is who you are and who you have become. I don’t know about you but I am a strange child, always have been, and forever will be strange.
Over the last fifteen years, I have grown mentally and socially. I credit my growth to my ability to analyze and understand the world for what it is. Social imagination is the use of information to understand the world and ourselves for who we are. Possessing the quality of mind that can develop reason and the capacity to shift perspectives are the basis of social imagination (Mills 2000). As I mentioned in reflection one, I came to realize that my way of thinking is what helped me overcome living a poor lifestyle.
I have all been in life situations, a first date, team tryouts,a job interview or first day of school where we feel obligated to make a “good impression”. I try to present a positive image of myself in way that otters will form a positive judgement about me. This paradox is not only a critical aspect of my life but a key factor of my social development. It is a science and an art that provides a framework, addressing all the element clothing, grooming practices, body language and etiquette and vocal communication. I wake up everyday and always make sure that I brush my teeth, put on deodorant and do my hair.
Based on the way I look, people assume that I’m biracial. As far as the way I talk, so many people have told me that I “talk white.” I don’t really understand why people choose to judge without knowing why I am who I am. “Cultural identity is the identity or feeling of belonging to a group. It is part of a person's self-conception and self-perception and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture.”
Other people, by just looking at me, would identify me as some sort of European white woman. While this is not an incorrect statement, people assume that I do not recognize my culture. When it comes to my immediate family, there are no racial differences however with my extended family on my mother’s side, there are many members that are mixed with different races. Sexual
Who am I? This question is posed by almost every person at some time during their lives. Who we are defines our experiences, impacts familial and social relationships, characterizes our expectations of ourselves and others, and governs our values both learned and perceived. A difficult task for any person evaluating this question is being honest with ourselves about our own prejudices concerning factors such as ethnicity, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, and country of origin among many more underlying differences that distinguish ourselves from other minority groups.
In the past, I found myself identifying myself to have commonalities with people surrounding me. When I was surrounded by a diverse group of people, I would find that I would gravitate towards those who appeared to have something in common with me. I believe I was drawn towards people of the same age range, race, and culture the same as my own because it is something familiar. Although I still think that I gravitate towards individuals like myself, I believe I try to branch out and meet others individuals that differ from me more than I did in that past. Now, I shape my own identity.
In this story, you are going to learn a little about my culture. A huge part of my culture identity is sports most of the stuff I do on weekends/weekdays are all to do with sports from playing it to watching it to teaching it to hate it everything we do in our family is sports. Also i am going to talk about what my family does during the holidays because I think it's special what we do on holidays one time on the fourth of July we were at a firework show and the bin of fireworks caught on fire and they all went off and someone got hurt so scary. you're going to find out what we do on the holidays and about our sports so enjoy.
