Georgetown instills values and ideals that include promoting social justice, fostering intellectual excellence, and educating the whole person. These values have been integrated into my dedication and passion to contributing to my on-campus communities. Throughout my four years at Georgetown, my academic performance, community outreach efforts, and pursuit for social justice embody these values. My first year at Georgetown was full of twists and challenges. As a first-generation and low-income (FGLI) student, acclimating to the rigor and demand of a top university proved challenging. Despite my willingness to adapt, I was held back by my lack of cultural capital with regards to academic success in higher education. I fought back to hide my fear of failure and tried to navigate the process without tapping into resources. However, I quickly realized that to succeed I would need to find community. Since my sophomore year, I have served on the GSP Student Board and held different leadership positions. For the past year, I have served as the president and taken on the challenge to amplify our program’s visibility. My goal throughout my tenure has been to cultivate a safe space for FGLI students and to enrich a vibrant community on-campus. As a collective, this year’s Student Board has achieved tremendous success including attendance of over 400+ students in attendance for GSProud week. As a leader in this space, uplifting and highlighting GSP students is a testament of the vigor in community building. Through my leadership and the commitment of the Student Board, this past year has been filled with new opportunities and growth for our program.
