It was the last inning in our all-star game, and we were losing 10 to 8. Our team had 2 outs and we couldn’t get the third. Our pitcher was doing bad, throwing all balls, while all of us in the field were tired, ready to fall asleep at any moment. There goes another walk. They score again.
Higher education has undoubtedly undergone immense changes throughout history. These changes are addressed in the article “Not what it used to be; Higher education,” written for The Economist. The article begins by saying that American colleges are clearly still doing well, as “more than half of the top 100 universities, and eight of the top ten, are American” in international rankings. The main point of the article, though, is how drastically the costs and debts accompanying a college education have increased throughout history. The article states that “In 1962 one cent of every dollar spent in America went on higher education,” but by 2012 this number tripled.
At my high school, the Beta Club is the most elite, respected, and prestigious club. It is filled with the leaders, the doers, the hard-working, and the individuals who turn their dreams into reality. It is not for everyone, and in our ever-changing society, that is clear. Most people today do not like to rise up to the ever-growing challenge of leadership. It takes a certain kind of person to be a good leader, and the Beta Club has greatly helped me in doing so.
“3 Reasons College Still Matters” by Andrew Delbanco 3) “Surely, every American college ought to defend this waning possibility, whatever we call it. And an American college is only true to itself when it opens its doors to all - the rich, the middle, and the poor - who have the capacity to embrace the precious chance to think and reflect before life engulfs them. If we are all serious about democracy, that means everyone.” 4) In this part of the writing Andrew Delbanco tries to persuade his audience by using the pattern of logic that agrees with the overall argument but also considers another striking point of view to strengthen the argument (While these arguments are convincing, they must also consider…).

Dancing Through the Pages Reading has never been a hobby of mine. Yeah, I would read the required books for school or may pick up a random book occasionally, but I have never been a bookworm. Some books I read in class were, personally, not stimulating. There was one, however, that stood out to me and grabbed my attention from the very first page, not knowing that this book, later on, would leave an impact on my fascination of a previous decade and dance career.
When I was an underclassman the definitions of clubs seemed to blur into an indistinguishable mass. Yet, I eventually realized that Key Club stood out because of its member’s desire to serve. For me, Key Club has become staying up late and drafting an email again and again, or spending hours organizing a program, and always getting to serve a school that has done so much for me. Despite its hardships, I have loved being the K2K East board member this year! Key Club has given me fantastic opportunities to serve my school and my community.
Let me explain. Historically, universities were never meant to be places where people prepared for jobs or where specialists aimed to benefit the “private sector.” The university has traditionally been a community of people sharing in the exploration of human thought and creativity. The common assumption since universities became public enterprises has been that if the best minds of our youth are an important natural resource, then universities will maximize their development.
Every year college prices dramatically increase. People are constantly debating with themselves whether college is worth the cost or not. Since the cost of college is constantly increasing its harder for people to keep up with the cost. Although the price of a college education continuously increases, it is worth the cost since college graduates make more income and become more successful than high school graduates. A solution to this problem is for colleges to stop making students spend extra money to turn colleges into a “country club”, and for colleges to focus on education not “country clubs”.
An inevitable part of growing is constantly learning and experiencing new things. After a certain period of time, we come to that point that we become able to think about everything we have learned until now in a completely independent way. This point is maybe one of the most difficult ones, since it deeply reaches our conscience. It also requires a lot of sacrifice from us to let the wrong opinions and ideas be replaced with the logical and reasonable ones.
Entering for the first time in a summer class can be quite frightening. This is what happened to me today. I had no idea we were going to have a new instructor then the one that I was assigned to. I knew entering this course would be challenging do with the class being five weeks long. As I walked in I sat down, and met two new people named Stephanie Corona and Tristan Yahn.
My Reading Goal I knew that I was challenging myself when I set this goal of two books that were 500 pages or over for the first quarter. I am busy person, but I knew that I would be faced with that same problem in college. When I am in college I am going to have more than just two college classes to worry about. I will be a full time college student with other activities also. So with knowing what I was getting myself into I set high standards for myself and tried experiencing what it was like to push myself to the limit.
Amy Purdy asks “If your life was a book and you were the author, how would you want your story to go?” To start off, every person is born into different situations in different parts of the world. Some people are able to choose our environment and community others have limited mobility. People have different rights and social abilities around the world, but we all want to achieve happiness. Despite there being different levels of control over ones situation, the one thing we are in control of is how each person reacts to the situation at hand.
When I think of a place that is special to me multiple things come to mind. My bedroom for starters is very special to me, especially because of the privacy it provides. I have six siblings, so privacy is something I value highly. Another special place to me is Black Bay Park, which is where my family would take walks to back in Post Falls, Idaho. There is one place however that shines brighter than the rest, and that is my grandparents' house.
I will start with explaining why I chose the book I did. I will also go over two important aspects of the book that interested me. Such as tips to start off your day, and prioritizing your goals and accomplishments of the day. I have found two sources that Corroborate what I have read.
