Stories from the Civil War often are told from a man's perspective and rarely from a woman's point of view. In 1902, Susie King Taylor wrote her memoir, Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33d United States Colored Troops Late 1st S. C. Volunteers, to explain her role in the war as a wife to a soldier, the regiments' laundress, a teacher, and a nurse. Taylor is famously known for being the first black nurse during the Civil War, but her memoir gives historians a closer look at her life and multiple roles during the war. In 1848, Taylor was born into slavery in Savannah, Georgia.
Let me just ask you, have you ever wanted to dig holes for treasure? Well, everyday Stanley and other “inmates” have to dig one hole everyday. Trust me, it is not fun at all. “There is no real lake at Camp Green Lake,” it actually dried out hundreds of years ago. Stanley was arrested for “stealing” a pair of famous baseball player Clyde Livingston's shoes.
“I’ll get the paddleboard on the rocks,” I called up to Mason. He was already halfway up the stone stairs that led up the hill. I leaped up onto the first stair, and bounded up the hill, jumping two stairs with every stride. I was overjoyed to be in Northern Michigan on Long Lake, the largest of the twenty inland lakes in Long Lake Township. My hockey teammate, Mason, had invited me up to his amazing lake house.
Stanley is the main character of the book. He is an overwight kid that loves to eat. He is convicted of a crime that he did not commit. but no one believes him. As a result, he is sent to a camp called Camp Green Lake which is a juvenile detention center.
Life at Valley Forge Brave, have no fear of someone or something. American soldiers represent bravery. The huts of the soldiers were very long and wide. The fireplace was in acceptable condition. No beds in the huts just straw and mud.
Life in Vicksburg has grown to be more and more difficult with each passing day. It has been about a month and a half since the Union began the siege and cut off the imports that the people of Vicksburg need to live and thrive. From the shortage of food to the lack of hope, every day has a common theme of despair within Vicksburg’s residents. Both my neighbors and I feel weak without proper nourishment from healthy food and clean water, but worst of all, we are unsure of how much longer this living nightmare will continue. I now feel obligated to change the way I have been living by, with great regret, deciding to surrender to the Union army.
For the extra credit assignment, I decided to visit Cedar Key. I chose Cedar Key because it is the closest coastal town to Gainesville. During my visit to Cedar Key, I explored the charming city center. I also visited the state park which contained a museum and the Whitman home which allowed me to learn more about the history of Cedar Key.
One day, on a Saturday afternoon . We went to the boat. The boat is parked at the bow at Newman lake. The boat is a blue and white color. The blue is a dark blue but faded.
“ Camp Green Lake is a camp for bad boys. ”(Sachar 5) Camp Green Lake is a place for juvenile delinquents to be unhappy. Stanley changes from overweight and bullied to progressfull and happy because of how Sacher describes him in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Stanley yelnats in holes by Louis Sachar often describes as overweight ,bullied, and innocent.
HONK! BEEP! SQUEAKK! Every which way of me, cars are honking and breaks are squeaking but I don’t care because I see it, the best amusement park ever… Cedar Point!
Pop! Pop! Zoom! Whiz! I heard them and I heard them loud.
“There is no Lake at Camp Green Lake. There once was a very large lake here, the largest lake in Texas. That was over a thousand years ago. Now it is just a dry, flat wasteland.” (Sachar 3) “... if you take a bad boy and make him dig a hole every day in the hot sun, it will turn him into a good boy.”
I have been greatly challenged and rewarded by the campers I have interacted with here. One of the greatest challenges I have faced while serving in this role is finding a healthy balance between focusing on the needs of other and focusing on myself. Hello! Yes I am doing well and had been travelling a lot recently. I am going to Big Bear Lake in CA this weekend with a couple friends. Time to ski! haha
Camp Texas changed my life, being an out of state student, I was all alone coming to UT, and Camp Texas introduced me to my best friends and allowed me to build and have relationships as soon as I arrived on the forty acres. However I went beyond that, I came back and was a counselor last year. Strangely enough, I enjoyed being a counselor more than a camper. Smiles enveloped Camp Buckner both my sessions, I saw students who were more prepared than ever for college, and I want to be apart of that again.
