I consider myself to lean fairly liberal on almost all issues. By fault of my generation or birthplace or the media I regularly consume, I have become a democrat, through and through. Yet this summer, I found myself racing across the Iowa State Fair in search of the antithesis of all things progressive: Donald Trump. My mother grew up in Iowa, and I’ve spent almost every summer creek stomping and biking around the corn capital of the world. These summers always culminate in a visit to the State Fair, which is just as decadently American as you’d expect. It’s a place that’s completely unlike Miami in every way, and perhaps the only spot in the universe where Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump can draw equally fawning crowds. Today, I was doing a political double feature: Trump in the morning and Sanders in the afternoon. On the drive over, I tracked Trump’s twitter feed as he announced his assent, and was delighted when I saw his helicopter (emblazoned, stereotypically, with the words “TRUMP 2016” in large, presumptuous font) fly overhead. After some sleuthing, I tracked him down in front of the Pork Chop on a Stick tent, and viciously elbowed my way through the crowd for a selfie. Trump stood for everything that I disliked about modern American media and society, but I had given into the circus and fed into his parasitic celebrity demeanor. Lofty ideals were worth nothing if I was going to pay into the parts of the system I disagreed
