Personal Narrative: My Writing Experience As A Law Writer

Writing is an aspect of English that has been an ambivalence within my writing journey. Growing up, I had mixed assumptions about writing. How can something like writing, which has been displayed as something that allows someone to express ideas, and increases creativity give mixed assumptions? The problem arose from strict guidelines that demolished creativity and the freedom to express my ideas. In grade twelve, my law teacher gave our class an assignment which was to write an essay on a Canadian law that we would want to remove. The essay had no strict guidelines and allowed us to write it in whatever way we wanted to. This moment in my writing experience changed everything. I realized how a creative, flexible writing approach was what worked for me the best. With the creative approach to writing, I was able to have a flow of ideas, and express them well, and how aspects such as clarity, coherence and editing became less of an issue to me. I approached the law essay with the creative approach route as I believed it was the best way to express my ideas. Furthermore, my decision to use the creative approach instead of the rigid approach is similar to how Rose (1980) highlights that rigid approaches are huge issues in the writing process. Rose (1980) expressed that when someone is taught a rule for writing, it can make the process of writing feel more rigid and forced. Instead of being a creative process where ideas flow freely, it can become more like a set of instructions that must be followed exactly. By reflecting on my experience, I realized that my understanding of the context of my writing was a crucial factor in my success in past essays I wrote, and in order to effectively understand the context of my writing, using a creative writing approach would allow me to do this. Creative writing aligned with this threshold concept as I found that using creative writing approaches allowed me to express my ideas freely and consider the context in which my writing will be produced and consumed. Creative writing allowed me to be more responsive to the audience and the purpose of my writing. I was able to adjust my style and tone to suit the needs of my reader and to achieve the goals of my writing, which aligns with the threshold concept that "good writing is contextual," as I took the audience and purpose of my writing into consideration, and adjusted my writing accordingly. I knew my audience was a teacher who had expertise in the field of law so I adjusted my writing style and language to suit my audience's level of understanding. I also took into consideration the purpose of my essay, which was to remove a Canadian law of our choice. By understanding these elements of context, I was able to write an essay that was both well-received and successful in achieving its intended
