Throughout my life, I have always identified myself as an Albanian. We, as a family, are Albanian. I have grown up knowing the language and attempting to learn how to read it. Each summer our family would go over seas to Macedonia, so that I could learn my heritage and my culture. It may sound confusing as to why we would visit Macedonia when our background is Albanian, However the answer is quite simple. When the European borders were being made, a large number of the Albanian population was considered part of Macedonia (the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia), this included my family. I have always felt the need to be like my counterparts, that is, until recently. I have recently learned to embrace my culture and what makes me different from everyone else. I have realized that I have been exposed to much more than others have. I have been exposed to different cultures, religions, and social classes. I have seen Christians and Muslims work together, I have seen up to 20 people sitting on a street, homeless, begging for money, and I have seen how it is to live without modern conveniences, such as electricity. Through these experiences, I have had my eyes opened. I have realized that there is so much more out there than just America and my home town. I have learned to be open-minded and think before I speak as not to offend anyone. I have learned to always treat others with respect and be kind to everyone, as I do not know their background. Not many people can say that they have been affected so much by a culture. I can say that my culture has shaped me to be who I am. While I will be an American and will always respect my country, I will always be an Albanian at
