There was a famous soldier during World War II whose name was Desmond Doss. Doss was a 23 year old soldier when he first went into battle. Doss fought in three major battles which were: Battle of Guam, Battle of Leyte, and Battle of Okinawa. Doss received the Medal of Honor from President Harry Truman for demonstrating incredible bravery. In The True Story of Hacksaw Ridge and Desmond Doss, a People article written by Mike Miller, the author states,”Private Desmond Doss walked into the bloodiest battle of World War II’s Pacific theater with nothing to protect himself save for his Bible and his faith in God. A devout Seventh Day Adventist and conscientious objector, Doss had enlisted as a medic and refused to carry a rifle”(1). This stereotypes was developed because individuals think that marines go into the military as a last resort. One fails to realize that some recruits join in order to go to college. Many marines take this route due to financial problems. This way when the marine finishes college the marine will have experience in that field, making it easier to find a job. There are individuals as well who grow up as having a dream of becoming a marine. For example, individuals who dream of obtaining a management position that requires increasingly technical skills in the Marine Corps, that individual would join NROTC. The NROTC Program educates and trains qualified young individuals for service as a commissioned officers. The NROTC Program also awards scholarships for young individuals who demonstrate the required skills and intelligence in order to attend colleges and universities.
