On May 12, 1962 General Douglass MacArthur wrote the speech entitled Duty, Honor, Country to soldiers at West Point academy during the proposal of the Thayer award. The Thayer award is given to West Point military each year, honoring the achievements of Sylvanus Thayer. This award was presented to “…those who guard this beloved land of culture and ancient descent.” While using the motto: “Duty, Honor, Country,” cadets learn to frame their courage, maintain faith, and develop hope during times of war. It is this motto that often keeps cadets strong in the face of fear and shows them that there is more than just the constant confusion that envelops them every day. He states “The soldiers, above all other men, is required to practice the greatest act of religious training - - sacrifice.” Since General MacArthur has been a part of multiple wars, he knows and understands the struggles and hardships war can bring. Through the wars we face today, all the way back to the first wars we ever saw or heard of, have scared veterans and brought them home with post traumatic stress disorder. One thing that training can also help because of the simple fact that it would allow the soldier to apply its knowledge, ability, and focus to the healing of psychological matters. MacArthur is an outstanding military figure who served in World War 1, World War 2, and the Korean War. As General, he’s experienced and knows a soldier “… mission remains fixed, determined, and inviolable: it is to win our wars.” He relates to the cadets by showing them he’s been in the same position they are in today. Due to his own personal experiences, any American soldier can prosper through the horrific ways of war because their duty and honor is to this country.
