For all of you who want to hear about my comical yet embarrassing experience in the Norwich Backus Hospital, well here it is. It was a glum Monday morning like any other Monday or day in general in New England. Birds were crying, skies were churning as the day went on preparing to brew another Noreaster. However, it was not the only thing churning that day. For the past few days, I have been having severe abdominal pains. Pains that would stab my stomach, twisting and turning every which way. What seemed to be my stomach practicing contortion like the girl on America’s Got Talent was more intense than I thought. When nature was calling unspeakable things had occurred and I thought mother nature was here to give her monthly present, but it was not her. The nurses had begun to repeat my name several times to draw my attention away from everything around me. “Shaina” she said. “Shaina” she repeated. My trance was broke and I was now in room 201. It was small and compact. We sat there for hours waiting for a doctor and nurses checked in every few minutes. The main desk was located outside the room and you could hear the nurses conversing with one another. I distinctly remember hearing: “have you had a break yet, Diana?” from one of the nurses. Diana responded with, “I have had one break but I am working a 16 hour shift tonight so one more would be nice”. Hearing and eavesdropping on their conversation astonished me. A sixteen hour shift is more than what the average American works. The usual work day is half that, yet people underestimate the work of a nurse. They work long tedious hours in day or night, rain or shine. They deal with needles, blood, and several other things that would make me squeamish. For goodness sakes I couldn’t even get through my blood work without passing out let alone do what a nurse
