Gretchen Rubin, a famous American author, once said, “One of the best ways to make yourself happy in the present is to recall happy times from the past.” Sometimes, thinking about moving on and leaving Ho-Ho-Kus leaves us with tears and makes it hard to swallow. Some of us have been students here for nine years, some of us for as little as one, but ending this chapter of our lives is scary. Instead of thinking about moving on, I urge everyone to reflect upon happier memories from our younger years. Whether that be playing with fluffy chicks in first grade or caring for our frogs and hermit crabs in fifth, that is up to you. We had to quickly adapt to the fast-paced schedule of moving classes and using lockers. Although it was a huge leap from fourth grade, fifth grade was not unbearable and gave us a taste of independence. From hominids and Egyptian Kings to protists and hermit crabs, we completed our first year of middle school successfully. The next three years of school introduced additional concepts and further transitions that boosted our social and educational mindsets. Stokes created an opportunity to make everlasting friendships, some of which are still alive today. We bonded with each other through campfire songs and worked as teams to complete strategic courses. This momentous occasion marks the third milestone of our school career: our first overnight trip as a grade. As sixth and seventh grade carried on, new material was introduced by teachers of whom we had never met before. We began to dive into foreign language, exposing ourselves to various cultures and traditions. Our core classes advanced us into better writers, stronger mathematicians, meticulous scientists and wonderful examples of civic leaders. The last first day attending Ho-Ho-Kus school had finally come. Throughout the year, we celebrated the last-first days of everything, from pizza lunch to ice cream day. Our service projects molded us into exemplar personally-responsible citizens and helped us get a sense of how to act like adults in the real world. We geared up for high school, taking placements tests and writing portfolio essays. Although not everyone will be attending the same school in the fall of 2018, the memories we have made will stay embedded in our hearts for eternity. The last few months of eighth grade hit us like a truck. We were struck with the realization that we would no longer be attending Ho-Ho-Kus anymore. The same hallways, the same lunchroom, the same auditorium, and the same faces. However, as I said earlier, these times call for reflecting upon happier memories, rather than sad. One of my proudest accomplishments as a seventh and eighth grader is the fact that, for two years in a row, I have never, not once, received a zero in math class.
