Have you read or heard of the Chinese Cultural Revolution. It’s a difficult period in Chinese history, and was a massive upheaval launched by Chinese leader Mao Zedong to renew the spirit of revolution in China. The book “The Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Chinese Revolution” in which the author is Ji-li Jiang, talks about this major event in Chinese history and tells the story of one girl's struggle to keep her family together during the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Ji-li changed many times in different sections of the book. One of the main events that changed her the most was during class when one of her classmates revealed her class status because she first felt that she should have never existed and that she had never had a grandfather
Over time, China seeks to monitor and control how its citizens use it. “The Great Firewall” blocks websites and pages of certain topics that the government does not want its citizens to see. They do not want its people to look at the way the country is actually runs. The censorship of websites in China characterizes the lack of trust that the government has with the people (James Chinese Internet Censorship). China’s government does not want any video or audio content that will go against their culture and traditions.
In the telling of two different women, Helen Praeger Young attempts to describe a woman’s perspective of the Cultural Revolution and being Communist in China. The poor and educated were the original individuals to accept communism, although both poor and educated are usually words that are counterintuitive when combined, this Communist movement indeed combined the two terms and these two terms progressed into success for Communist China. In addition, to this, Chinese values continued on into the Cultural Revolution, the Long March and the path to Communist China. So while, the Communist Party did make radical changes to Chinese society, Communists ensured that some Chinese values and morals were still included in their propaganda and as
Wong Tai-Sen Taoism Center is a Chinese temple for thousands of Buddhist pilgrims across California. I enjoy going to the temple on every Chinese new year’s eve. Located in the center of Monterey Park, Wont Tai-Sen Temple, in the distance, reveals its mystical cosmological laws which is believed to control the working of the universe and the harmony between “heaven” and earth. As I drive toward the gates, I am mentally ready for such a huge Chinese new year ceremony and some very unique feelings of serenity and purity Wong Tai Sen can offer. New year’s eve is just a few minutes shy while I am still in line waiting to get into the temple.
I am a proud but slightly regretful owner of a Chihuahua. At the age of eight I saw an episode of “That’s So Raven” that featured a little, white, long haired Chihuahua and I died. It was the cutest little dog
This is because their occupation of Tibet is illegal, violating human rights, and rapidly destroying Tibetan language and culture. Tibet has never been a part of China and is an independent nation under unlawful occupation. First of all, prior to
In her debut novel, author Amy Tan explains how unimportance and overall loss of heritage amid immigrant families affect them. Much later, in 2015, Quetzal Marucci photographs and interviews second-generation immigrants on their experiences and struggles with their cultural identities. In the novel, each mother wishes to instill traditional values in her daughter before she becomes too americanized, however, one daughter’s caucasian friends claim that she was just “about as Chinese as they were” (Tan 267). Likewise, a Russian-American interviewee, Sasha Kazachkova, explained that she feels closer to her American friends than her Russian immigrant ones due to differences in valuing Russian culture. In her visit to China, Jing-mei feels that
China’s healthcare has been through a roller coaster of reform, impacting the health of every citizen throughout history. The country has endured many impactful changes with the large shifts in power, eventually leading to its current healthcare system today. The Cultural Revolution of China was a starting point, with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) taking power in 1949. The CCP implemented a health system reflecting the Marxist communist ideology. Health care was universal.
Imperialism is the act of creating an empire, through extending a country’s power by force, often military, or forming international relations. In many cases the imperializer country reaps financial benefits and extracts resources and raw materials from the country that is colonized, leaving the natives with little to no resources or the ability to advance and develop. When, one country enters another and takes over, it silences the people living there, forcing their voices and their opinions, on how their country should be governed, to be silenced. In many cases this lack of listening to the people’s needs, by the colonizing country’s leaders, has disastrous results: destroyed economies, lives lost, and broken alliances, like the relationship between the British and the Chinese from early 1700s until around 1912.

According to the Chinese government’s verdict, it is inferred that China’s government was acting as the victims, as they denied having done any wrongdoings. This can be compared to the “comfort women” during WWII. “Comfort women” were basically women from various countries that were forced to “comfort the Japanese soldiers”. They were abused and raped day till night, but Japan denied this until today. The Japanese government denied these efforts during WWII, which is similar to the Chinese government during the Tiananmen Square
Personal Statement I would like to confirm that it is my motivating of Chinese culture that ignited my passion for cultural and creative industry. As a Tourism Management major student, I was able to explore the Chinese diversified cultures and landscapes, which offered me an insightful understanding of the Chinese cultural development. Under the guidance of commercialization, some cultural heritages have developed into huge tourism souvenir markets full of counterfeit and shoddy products. The over-commercialization reveals the fact that the Chinese culture is facing a severe situation. The country calls for a better cultural development strategy, which cultural and creative industry can offer.
` A key feature of capitalistic ideology is the promotion of individualism, that is, the principle that individual effort is rewarded and benefits the individual. In contrast, a key feature of socialist ideology is the promotion of the good of the collective over the individual. China has been a socialist nation since the latter half of the 20th century. Yet, the last 20 years have brought extensive economic reforms that have transformed the country into a pseudo-capitalist market economy. Has this economic transformation been mirrored by an ideological one?
