Jesse Thistle wrote a superb memoir, From the Ashes, where he talked about the trauma he struggled with throughout his life as an addict. Throughout the story, Jesse finally finds himself in his heritage and decides he needs to make a change or else he is going to die. Jesse faced a lot of traumas at an early age; Jesse was abandoned, starved, and watched his dad do drugs. These were only a few of the traumas he faced at an early age as a result, he followed in his dad’s footsteps. Eventually, Jesse learned to heal and re-claim his heritage and make amends with his family.
In Amanda Gorman’s poem “The Hill We Climb” at the 2021 Biden inauguration, she campaigns for a united nation to fight against the many problems of division and adversity prevalent within American society. Gorman acknowledges the struggles America has faced recently, including the 2021 COVID-19 pandemic and the Capitol riots, claiming that the people of our country “would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy” (line 18). During times of distress and adversity, Gorman advocates for us as Americans to work together to make change and alleviate the problems within our country, rather than causing havoc and riots to damage our nation even more. She states that overcoming adversity teaches us a lot about our nation, stating that even
President John F. Kennedy 55 years ago, during his inaugural address, called for Americans to serve their country with the powerful quote: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Since then, a million Americans have signed up for service through AmeriCorps. I can testify that data because I’m one in a million that is currently serving as an AmeriCorps member at City Year Washington D.C. The reason why I’m serving currently as a core member at City Year is because I believe that in order to change the world, you have to start from home.
Let me explain: Today, America faces turmoil daily on topics relating to race, religion, gender, and so on. If somebody were to ask me, “What would you do to promote Americanism?” I would answer with two very simple words- share love. Hate seems to have overtaken this entire nation quickly and, suddenly, the pride of being an American has lost value. People feel embarrassed to associate with a country so full of hate, a country that should be known for tolerance, but instead has become known for hate and “race
Several individuals from different ethnicities, races, and citizenships, compose a society. The United Sates allow us to have a close interaction with numerous individuals from diverse backgrounds. In my own case I have been able to interact with many incredible individuals from all over the world who come from extremely different backgrounds. I am a proud Mexican who cherishes respect towards diversity. Coming from a very suffered country I am able to understand not only what does it means to feel proud to be a Latino, but also I can feel acquainted with the pain and struggle that our community has to face every day.
Tragedy is often thought to be synonymous with despair, confusion, and pain. When tragedy strikes, it brings heartache to the surrounding community and in the immediate aftermath of the attack, everyone is hurting. But then, just as the dust begins to settle, and the shock of the event has passed through our systems, we unite in unimaginable ways shouting phrases of patriotism, nationalism, and solidarity. “United We Stand” swept through the streets of New York City and across America after the terrorist attacks of 9/11, “Boston Strong” was heard throughout the Boston area and tweeted all over social media following the Boston Marathon bombing, and “Je Suis Charlie” was shouted in many rallies throughout France following the terrorist attack
The Reason the United States Government Has Failed its People It is now January 3rd, 1931, and I have been unemployed and homeless for over a year now living on the streets of Chicago. About ten years ago, I started working in a factory that created underarm deodorant. Around a year and a half ago, my wage was decreased. Eventually I was fired.
The new American hero (Just a quick look) Can you see the handsome young man sitting by my side, driving through the forest, behind the wheel of his decadent truck? Yes. I would trust him with my life (sip of vodka).
The American experience is not unfamiliar to me, I have been visiting America since I was a child and as a child I always wanted to move to America. My first visit here I fell in love with the culture specifically the freedom of expression. However the opportunity did not emerge for me to move to America legitimately and as promising young child, I did not want to damage my future by moving to a country illegally where I could not live to my full potential. I stayed in Jamaica and I completed my University education as a registered nurse and had become comfortable with my life in Jamaica. I started working the spring of 2013 and upon receival of my first paycheck, I was reminded that this is not the place I wanted to be.
For as long as our country has been established, we were taught that it is second to no one. If these beliefs are tarnished, the United States will collapse into a downward spiral. It is important to look past America's flaws and look at its overwhelming accomplishments because, as once said by Abraham Lincoln, “A house divided against itself cannot stand”. As we begin to see in modern politics, when political parties become so polarized, we turn to fight each other rather than focus on the bigger issues at hand. Americans are becoming more and more uneasy with the state of our country, and it is showing through an increase in domestic conflicts and opposing ideals.
Numerous Americans would agree, 2015 was not a pleasant year in the United States. Although there have been strides in technology and civil rights, tensions rose in the Middle East and countless mass shootings occurred. As the 2016 election nears, a myriad of presidential candidates are promising a better future, but one, in particular, has caught the eye of the nation. The billionaire’s name is Donald Trump and he is the GOP’s front runner. Supporters believe in Trump’s campaign slogan that he will “Make America Great Again”, but there also those who have condemned him as well as his ideas.
Growing up I always knew my mindset was far past my years. The way my mind worked was different and older than those kids around me, so it was no surprise for me to be on my own right from the get go after turning 18. For as long as I can remember I have always done everything by myself especially school related. My parents are Hispanic and speak little English, making me the first person in my family to attend college. My parents brought me to the United States from Mexico at the age of four and I have lived in Oklahoma ever since.
When we combine and demonstrate peace, love, and positivity to others, we can truly change the world for the better and achieve a semi-utopian society in which we always “Pay It Forward.” Although many people believe they are doing something to change the world, in the end, they are truly making it harder to get ahead for most people. Heading into the presidency, Donald Trump believed he had something to help each group of people in the U.S.A.; and, if he were to get elected, he would once again “make America great again.” As we have all witnessed, he has only caused more divides of greater magnitude and has honestly caused this country to take a step backwards. In the film, “Pay It Forward” by Mimi Leder, there are multiple characters that demonstrate that we have our own ways of changing the world that can be classified through the rhetorical strategies of ethos, pathos, and logos.
The Communist movement began to receive attention in the late 19th century from Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels which later went into effect for the first time during the early 20th century with Vladimir Lenin of Russia. The primary reason for the entire Communist movement to take place was an oppressed working class and a government built on corruption. Communism is defined as a political theory advocating class war and leading to a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs. This movement encouraged a strong opposition from pro-democracy countries across the globe such as America. Since the origins of the communist movement, the anti-communist movement has been just as prevalent in a rather responsive manner by essentially attempting to shutdown all advancements pro-communist countries have made.
