Personal Narrative: The Hoyt Family

When just watching someone run makes you smile so much that you are overwhelmed with happiness, it’s special. That’s what the Hoyt family did to me. Every weekend Rick’s dad pushes him through a triathlon or marathon, and it’s very inspirational to see. It’s empowering to see someone so dedicated to their son who was once called hopeless. That makes them a good role model for anyone, even if you don’t have a disability. They helped me better understand a life lesson that everyone should learn. When I first saw the video about the Hoyt team, I thought, what is it like to do all of this? what goes through their minds? I could only understand them to a certain point. But then when Dick explained “ We talked a little bit then we said no we are not gonna put Rick away. We’re gonna bring him home and raise him like any other child.” This made me understand Rick and Dick because it …show more content…

They taught me how to understand everyone a little better. That's what makes them a good role model, because they taught me something not just anyone can teach you. I realized this when Dick explained “Because you know he’s really happy, and he enjoys himself. He loves to be out there competing, and he’s letting me know.” When I heard him saying this I instantly thought how when I play tennis I am happy and I am enjoying myself. I can relate to when Rick is being pushed because I know that feeling that every obstacle is gone, and now you are just focusing on enjoying yourself. I am glad the Rick found that feeling. That’s why the Hoyt team is a great role model, they helped me connect on a deeper level than ever before. As you see the Hoyt team are 2 very inspirational people that have impacted so many people. By doing what they did, many other disabled people are able to feel what Rick and I have felt before. They have taught people lessons that they can use the rest of their life.
