Personal Narrative: Ultimate Frisbee

My life is consumed by a piece of plastic. Ultimate Frisbee has been part of my life for the last 3 years; I look back, and realize that it changed how I lived. This passion has driven me from being a timid freshman, who was clueless about many aspects of the world, to a confident athlete, who had learned many facets of life the hard way. Through ultimate, I have experienced failure, learned to cope with anger, and witnessed the best moments in sports. The ultimate team at my school has been a generally successful program, participating in the Division I High School State Championships every year and performing extremely well. However, as an underclassman, I played on the junior varsity team, and captained it my sophomore year. As a captain, I knew my team’s potential and led them to the number two seed in the annual Division II cities tournament. However, despite having a talented roster, crucial losses put us in fifth place. I went home that day feeling like I had let down the entire program. After a depressing sophomore year, I was determined to make my mark on this program. Spirit of the game is similar to the concept of good sportsmanship, but it is paramount in Ultimate. This rule separates Ultimate from other competitive sports by creating an environment that is enjoyable for all players of the game. Even when the game is on the line, good spirit is imperative. During a tight game against San Diego in the Youth Club Championships, both teams showed great spirit. Even though there were some hard fouls, and questionable calls, the idea of winning the game never took priority over integrity.
