We all need positive encouragement from time to time. As we enter a busy spring with NeSA testing right around the corner, it is easy to become overwhelmed with all the little details. We all want the best for our students and faculty. We want their true knowledge and accomplishment to be showcased. However, at this time of year, our own wells are starting to run a little low. A teacher or administrator makes 1,500 decisions a day. Wow! That average is approximately 4 decisions every minute. This statistic shows the complexity of an educator’s role. As an administrator, try to maintain a balance in your personal and professional life. A wise mentor once told me that I can’t take care of others if I don’t take care of myself first. I am as guilty as anyone when it comes to remembering to stop and look around. Find the things that speak to your heart, take a few minutes to enjoy a laugh and share a smile. The greatest attribute to Hackman’s character is the passion for the game and commitment to the way he believes it should be played. Hoosiers is a movie that stirs emotions in your heart for those of us that feel passion for our profession. The story is more than the final outcome, but is the journey to get there and conquering adversity along the way. As Hackman himself says to his players in the locker room before playing for the championship, “I don’t care what the scoreboard says at the end of the game. In my book, you’re winners!” This movie reveals a powerful message that winning isn’t everything; it is passion and striving for excellence that matters most.
