There are many sports films that are based off a true story which include many obstacles being overcome in order to be victorious in the end, and “Hoosiers” is one of those movies. “Hoosiers” is a sports film, made in 1986, that was based off of a true story. The true story of a small town basketball team in Indiana that miraculously came up to win the state championship. They were called the Hickory Huskers and they had to weave their way towards the top with their new coach, Norman Dale. Norman Dale had a sketchy reputation after being fired from hitting one of his players on his previous team, so coaching the Huskers was his last chance. Therefore, Hickory High was small as well, with less than two-hundred students in total. The whole community valued basketball extensively, alongside with the whole state of Indiana. Some main characters that were focused on throughout the movie were Cletus Summers, Myra Fleener, Jimmy Chitwood, and Shooter Flatch. Cletus was the principal of Hickory High School and a long-time friend of Dale who actually gave the job as a teacher and head basketball coach to Dale. Myra was a teacher from Hickory High that was very protective of Jimmy Chitwood. She wanted to protect Jimmy from being forced to play basketball again by warning Dale not to convince him to play because it could be a distraction from him getting an academic scholarship. Jimmy Chitwood was a star player of the basketball team, until he stopped playing when the previous coach, that he was very close with, passed away. Jimmy then agreed to play again if the town agreed to let Dale stay after a vote to remove him from his coaching position because they didn’t like how things were going. Shooter Flatch was the father of one of the basketball players, Everitt Flatch, and he was also an alcoholic. Later in the movie, Shooter was asked by Dale to be his assistant coach, but he gave him an ultimatum that he had to stop drinking for his own sake and his son’s …show more content…

At first, the team were acting like losers because they didn’t work together and believed that each one of them had to be the best or score the most points. The student body favored Jimmy a lot and they had trouble accepting the fact that Jimmy wasn’t going to be playing anymore. At first, they had a negative attitude towards the team, but they progressively supported more and more. The community didn’t support the team because they didn’t think that the players could work together and actually be good. Rade Butler was one of the players that struggled with teamwork because he believed that in order to be good, he had to be the one to make all the points and boost his individual performance. Later on, he learned about teamwork and realized that that’s the only way the team will do good. Another player that overcame challenges was Everitt Flatch. Shooter Flatch was his alcoholic father and he was often embarrassed by him and sometimes it would impact how he played. Everitt forgives his father later on and they both gain a good father-son relationship. Ollie Maclean was also another player that overcame a challenge. Ollie was a benchwarmer and he knew that he would never play because he wasn’t any good, but when the team needed him during sectionals, he stepped up and made the winning free throw
