Introduction
When a team wins a championship or a tournament, a question that comes to people’s minds is, “why did that team win the championship instead of the other and that team was clearly better, so how did they lose?” There is no clear answer to these questions but there are some ideas. Ideas of how a team’s leadership, chemistry, how teams handle adversity, and coaching truly plays a role in winning and losing. Some good attributes of leadership include enthusiasm, fairness, competence, selflessness, and most importantly trustworthiness (VanderClute, Pg.107). Leadership comes in a variety of different ways and comes in different styles. There are many different ways to lead people. Leadership also does not have to come from the best player on the team. Take for instance the 2017 Atlanta Braves. They have veteran guys who are the leaders of the team, but are not the best players. Leaders in certain circumstances do not have to be the veterans of the team; they can be the young people of the team or group also (VanderClute, Pg. 108). Good teams get through that adversity. Take a look back at the National Basketball Association’s Cleveland Cavaliers and Major League Baseball’s Chicago Cubs who both came back and won their respected championships after doing something that had never been done before. They were both down three games to one in which no one had ever came back to win before, and both of these teams came together as a team through leadership to overcome adversity. Adversity can come internally or externally for a team. Internally can include players not getting along with each other and causing conflict, or a player getting injured in a serious manner can really take a toll on a team. External conflict can come about from a team having media issues and accusations. Both internal and external adversity can be overcome. Look at the Super Bowl winning New England Patriots who overcame internal and external adversity and still ended up winning the Super Bowl. They had suspensions given to their leader, had a season ending injury to their best receiver, and faced many allegations of previous years, yet they overcame and accomplished their
