The objective of this research report is to identify and to discuss the key components of team cohesion. The three components that I will discuss are team development, leadership, and the situational factors. Each of these components are reviewed and discussed with the objective of explaining their importance towards establishing team cohesion in sports. Along with the explanation of these components, specific examples and experiences are provided to help facilitate an understanding of what it takes to build a true team.
Introduction
Cohesion, or cohesiveness, is a dynamic process that reflects the tendency of individuals in a group to stick together and remain united as a means of working towards the completion of a common goal or objective. The first stage of team development, forming, is when members of the group begin to size up and keep a close eye on each other to determine the strengths and weaknesses of the particular individual. This stage is demonstrated in the clip, “Creation of a Team,” where Coach Boone enters the gym and immediately establishes himself as the one who is charge of the team. It is evident that he is an independent decision-maker and that he stresses his own authority as being the one who is in control, which is considered to be an autocratic style of decision-making (Crocker, 2016, p.237).
