In the film “Remember the Titans”, we can see the development of a group from a somewhat dysfunctional group to a highly cohesive one. A group is two or more interacting and interdependent individuals who come together to achieve specific goals. In this case it is winning a state championship. In this film, we clearly observe 4 stages of group development, Forming, Storming, Norming and Performing. In the first forming stage occurs in the film when the black athletes are in the gymnasium ready to meet the Coach Boone. In this interaction the athletes have come together for the first time, they are total strangers and they are unsure of what to expect from their new coach (00:11:00). Coach Boone clearly defines the group’s purpose, structure, and leadership. Coach Yoast and Coach Boone have a discussion over their coaching responsibilities (00:13:50). After their meeting accompanied by a heated discussion a leadership dynamic is formed. After that, the team went to Gettysburg College for camp (00:18:15). The team is shown walking as a group. This is the first time we see them grouped whites and blacks together as a team, which signifies they have finished the forming stage and can now move on to the storming stage. At this stage the Titans are now a fully functional group. The scene shows that they are starting to perform and work as a team and this blocked pass is a turning point in the game and their playing. In just about every football scene after this they end up doing pretty well. The Titans then go on to win the state championship and after this win they complete the performing stage (1:44:00). In the last scene of the film both Coach Boone and Coach Yoast recognize each other’s value to the overall success of the team after they win the game (1:44:45).
