Personal Narrative: Veterans Day At Home

As a new and young manager at McDonald’s I had a lot of responsibility and stress on my plate. I worked for them for about a year and a half before I was promoted and I got to know the crew and got close to some before I moved up. One of the hardest things to do as a manager is run a shift when you are understaffed. The excuses you get from people will have you rethinking your life and the position you’re in. Having kids is a beautiful thing but when you use your kids as an excuse to call off of work over and over again it tends to get annoying. Yes I know kids get sick and you can’t make it in to work because nobody wants to watch a sick child but do they get sick every Friday? I start to wonder with this excuse because it makes it hard for those who really have a sick kid at home to tell me a more believable story. I tried to be more leant with this excuse but after hearing it every other day two minutes before a person’s shift it got frustrating. One that also ties into the kid excuse is daycare and school. We have the same federal holidays every single year, nothing changes, we all know they’re coming up and yet on the day of the holiday you’re calling in saying it’s Veterans day and my kid’s school and daycare is closed. The battery can do dead or the starter can be blown. There’s no way around this and it’s not like most of us have an extra car in the garage in case the current one goes out. This excuse is a tough one because it can be more than one day your car is down and out and more the one day you have to miss work but there is a way around this one and this might sound harsh but the bus is always an option or a cab.
