By all means; the Imperfect Mexican-American When I was younger, I couldn't fathom what my parents meant when they said ‘‘Cruce la frontera para que tengan una mejor vida,’’ In other words, I crossed the border for my children to have the future they longed for; their American dream. I understood the troubles and sacrifices they went through and felt the pain they carried for leaving their motherland, yet I didn't understand what life they were looking for me and my sisters. Years later, one afternoon, my sister greets us with the news that she got accepted to college, I thought this is it, the better life my parents wished for us, the sacrifices they made are paying off, yet to my surprise what was suppose to be proudness turned out to be
As one that comes from Italy as a first-generation immigrant, chasing that dream has always been a family motto and has helped me and my brothers get to where we are today. Therefore the speech reflected the ideas that build the “American
Reflecting on my development as a first-generation immigrant, I can attribute a large portion of my characteristics and aspirations to my experiences growing up and to the role model whom I have admired, my mother. More specifically, being exposed to the tireless work ethic of a single parent who had to overcome the dual pressures of assimilation and poverty has imparted in me a respect for the ideals of continual self-improvement and advancement. My mother’s sacrifices have always been to better our family’s situation and to provide me with the best education opportunities. Recognizing my mother’s hard worked and what she has given up for me, I put my best foot forward in every situation to honor her. Looking back at the hardships such as racial discrimination and language barriers my mother had to transcend, as
Lani: I was helping for someone’s project for COMM 245; I was in the video lab, in the studio. I was on campus and decided to contact everyone I knew who comes to the school. I remember I sent out a snap saying guys I think there is a shooting, be careful and then I started sending out individual texts to people making sure they were okay, like hey are you good? Stay out of an area.
Being a child of immigrant parents has taught me so much. For example, being able to work hard for what you want. At school, I always strive to get A’s. My parent’s have taught me to never settle for anything less than a B. They know that in order for me to go to college and be successful, I not only have to get good grades but work hard to get there.
Hi, my name’s Donovan. I’m 17 years old and graduated this year with honors. I was raised with Christian values in mind, and attended a Methodist school. I was raised in the Christian faith yet I find myself, as with some of my friends who were raised in the same conditions, we seem to be growing farther away from our upbringing as we age. I find myself simply not understanding as time goes by, a complete polar opposite from the song ‘Farther Along’.
Heritage, the roots of one’s background, is a major underlying factor that influences and defines the person one becomes. The heritage of a person allows for context of how and why an individual is where they are today. Through this piece, I will delve into my family heritage to discover how and why my ancestors came to the United States of America. In order to further understand more about my heritage and where I come from, I interviewed Ms. Katie Nguyen. Ms. Katie Nguyen is my mother who resides in Tempe, Arizona and is also my oldest living relative.
They not only found freedom in the New World, but by their effort and devotion, they made the New World's freedom safer, and richer, more far-reaching, more capable of growth.” This speech also contributes to what it means to be an American by giving the listeners or the readers an insight on how we should appreciate everyone and their background and how every person contributes to America's economy. To be American is not as simple as being born in the United States. To be an American is about embracing the culture and way of life. Americans can enjoy freedom of speech and are part of a diverse and rich culture.
Chapter one: The Usual —Laura sighed as she wiped the small drips of sweat off her forehead. She had been on her feet since 9 am and it was currently 6:45 pm, her shift was going to end in fifteen minutes. Laura had waited all day for him to arrive and order his usual, but for some odd reason he hadn't shown up yet. She figured he had found another coffee shop where he wouldn't have to see her face. She took a deep breath and held it in for a few seconds.
Some days I feel terrible, and some days I be feeling myself. I have had the pleasure of having Janet 's main engineer listen to a few of my beats and enjoy them. I wish I could have made Janet 's album, but she had already finished Unbreakable. I have had the pleasure of talking with the writer and creator of Malcolm and Eddie. Nothing has came about so far, but 2016 has been a way better year than 2015.
Throughout my life I have come from and created a few identities for myself. Perhaps, the most dominant identities that have been apart of my life are being an athlete and being a family orientated man. In this paper I will write about how my identities have shaped my life. First off I believe my biggest identity is being an athlete.
My parents, like most of us in the U.S., immigrated with dreams for a better future, but also feared the cultural unknowns. Three out of my four siblings have received a college education and I am who they consider as the trailblazer and the catalyst that left Houston, TX to attend university and study abroad for a larger view of life, and left no room for fear in her luggage. Growing up my father worked in construction and instilled in me a strong work ethic, dependability, and to strive for success that has molded me to be the fearless woman I am today.
As generations follow the children of the first immigrants have lost their heritage due to following the American ways. We have to remember that our heritage makes us who we are and we can never forget about it. Our heritage can help ourselves and help those around us. In “Achieving the American Dream” Andrea Cuomo and Immaculata Giordano both come to America to live a better life for them and their family to come.
What I learned about myself was that, instead of thinking that I was powerless, I ought to think my role, as a student, is equally important as the stakeholders involved in the program. I learned that part of my community nursing practice is sharing my personal knowledge that I have learned from school, and incorporating my perspectives as a student with others at meetings. It is my professional responsibility to ensure my perspective and feedback is heard, so that I feel apart of a team and included in the decision making process. This would then erase the idea of power imbalance between students and experienced professionals who are in leadership positions. In order to gain the best learning opportunity, I learned I must be equally involved
