Personal Reflection On Attending The Black Life

Attending the Black Lives Matter event helped me understand privilege in a different light. I appreciated that the panels were very diverse in the work they did and the actions they took in the cause. I was very awoken by the perspectives given and meditated on the privileges that I do or do not attain. It is extremely crucial that as the future generation, we understand the systems that oppression thrives from. Throughout my life I have learned about monumental people that attributed to the cause of segregation and Jim Crow laws. We have come a very long way, but it is very apparent that change still needs to be made. As I grew up I realized that often I dismissed the privileges that I had and didn't have, and the way society treated me as a female and a minority. Only when I started applying history to my current life, I began to understand the term privilege, the widespread ideology of white supremacy, racism and the systemic systems we have in our world. …show more content…

A good point made by the panelist was that "every minority doesn't have the same struggle as black problems…therefore they have to be black solutions." (Panelist, Former Student). We all have a unique history and these solutions cannot be the same, and rightfully shouldn't be. In order for change to occur it is important that we educate youth on black history. Without history, identity does not exist. I was surprised when the professor on the panel said her students had trouble discussing racism and contemporary race relations. Coming from a very diverse school, I was blessed to have met several people of various backgrounds and be a part of different ethnic organizations. Therefore, when the professor mentioned that the majority of students had trouble understanding different cultures caused me to see the flaws in the education
