Speak was a very inspirational book to me because of all the situations that Melinda overcame and even though at first she wasn’t very open, she later let herself speak the truth. The main focus of the book was letting yourself speak the truth and let someone help you during difficult times. It shows you not to endure all the pain but to talk about it. The book was written from her point of view and I think the author did good by putting it this way because we got to see how she thought of people and what she was feeling inside. At the beginning of the book it starts off by her having no friends because of something that happened in the past. She doesn’t talk a lot at the beginning because of the event. The books also evolves around her in art class having an assignment to draw a tree and really express what your feeling through it. At first she really doesn’t know what to draw or how to express herself but then starts to have ideas and try to make it very well drawn and sculpted. The tree helps her a lot because it turns out she was very sad and she put her emotions on the tree she makes. As the book continues she starts to say she feels guilty and wants to leave because of what happened. The only person she really talks to is heather from Ohio and she’s the only friend that Melinda had and she actually shared a lot to her. Later on heather becomes friends with the “popular” crowd which hurts Melinda because she wanted at least one friend. We later find out that she was raped the year before and she didn’t know what to do so she called the cops that night to report the party and everybody got mad at her and she lost all her friends. She confronts the guy and then decides to speak and she tells everyone what really happened and since he had done it to many other girls, the girls helped her speak out and to not be afraid of saying what you believe.
