My interest in medicine stems from the fact that as a doctor I will be constantly finding out about new illnesses and treatments, which in turn helps me to care for patients in times of distress and gives me the ability to provide the best cure possible for the illnesses the patients may have. The impact that my treatment could have on a patient’s life in a positive way, makes me appreciate this dynamic and unique profession even more. I shadowed a doctor in a general practice for a week and this allowed me to understand the importance of working as a team with the member of staff in a GP or hospital environment. One key observation which I made from both experiences is the communication between the doctor and patient, and how doctors are able to empathise with their patients on a day to day basis. I believe I possess qualities such as empathising with patients since this is something I have been improving on a weekly basis in my work at the care home with the elderly. I have been volunteering at a care home for 8 months which has been extremely valuable due to the fact that I have been able to help the elderly on a weekly basis. The care home has allowed me to get a grasp of the difficulties that many old aged people face whether it is due to the physical disabilities or the mental ailments which prevent them from functioning a normal life. I also make tea and coffee for the old people and have a chat with them about anything that may have happened in the day. This has been enjoyable since it helps improve my communication skills. Another work that I do in the care home is to go to the Reminiscence lounge and help the elderly with dementia and other mental health issues play games helps stimulate their minds and allows me to interact with
