Sweet sixteen: the celebration every teenager anticipates. Sixteen is the golden age that finally allows teens to drive, and driving constitutes the sliver of freedom that every adolescent craves. Often, people disregard the other milestones that are achieved at the age of sixteen, such as reaching the age that is eligible for employment; the summer I turned sixteen, I commenced my journey to employment promptly. Once hired, the realities of adulthood sucker-punched me in my face. Prior to my newly-acquired adulthood, my most prominent worries might have included the struggle of deciding what snack to eat after school; but once I became an employed young adult, more significant worries began to clutter my thoughts. For example, I became responsible for scheduling activities around days that included long shifts. Because I aspired to accomplish particular goals, such as maintaining my GPA, following an agenda efficiently became critical. Each Saturday, as a new work schedule was posted for the following week, I began to plan in advance for nights that would allow enough time to study. Having a job forces students to distribute their efforts between work, school, and other responsibilities that must be accomplished. Earning a weekly check also teaches adolescents the art of managing money wisely. When given a limited sum of money to distribute between eating at restaurants, gas, and other pass times with friends, teens will recognize how to spend allowances efficiently. Moreover, an employer may also have high expectations of time management. Certain jobs may require that the employee gets particular tasks done in a timely manner. Relatively, teachers expect students to accomplish assignments by set due dates. For example, presenting a professional composure within a work atmosphere is imperative; numerous store managers establish notable expectations for their employees in relation to appropriate conduct. Employed high school students, as well as other employees, may be expected to uphold to a standard of politeness and professionalism when interacting with customers and co-workers alike. Enforcing such standards in the student's work force will lead to alterations in his personal character as well. In addition, employment creates a need for making sacrifices. Others may have the time available to participate in amusing activities, while an employed individual may have to sacrifice their time to cover a shift. Decisions will have to be made about what to prioritize, and keeping such priorities in check causes individuals to maintain responsibility. Although more entertaining and appealing activities will arise, an employed young adult will prioritize his tasks and complete those that must be accomplished orderly.
