I moved in the UK six years ago after completing my BSc in Natural Sciences. Without much English and work experience I start a course in English (ESOL) and volunteering with the charity Rhythms of Life International (homeless charity). I found this experience very formative, not only because it allowed me to gain important experience, such as organization, team working and time management, but also because I had the opportunity to be in contact with people from all different backgrounds. While my role was to deliver food for the homeless, I also had the opportunity to listen to their story and chat with them. While at the beginning it was an opportunity to gain new skills and to improve my English, with the time spent in the shop I became very passionate and start volunteering every day, trying to do my best in order to increase the sails in the shop. As a consequence, in June 2015 I left my job and start volunteering with the TCV as a volunteer leader for the green gym. My responsibility was to lead and assist groups of 10 to 15 volunteers from a variety of backgrounds on project days to complete conservation tasks. I was also responsible for new volunteers’ registration, settling in, enquiries, complaints and feedback. During my volunteering I discovered that it was central in the group to encourage team working and self-confidence, allocating appropriate tasks to the different skills and needs of the volunteers. In this way I felt that volunteers were feeling able to contribute and were happy about what they were doing.
