The article “Why Do We Hate Our Bodies?” by Gillianne N. Duncan, purpose is to urge people to stop self hatred towards their bodies. The author discusses about women complaining about their bodies at her job. She then asked her co-workers if they hated their bodies and answered no that they just wanted to look better. Throughout the day at her job she listens to her “co-workers talking about going to the gym, dieting, surgeries they would have if they had money, and even starvation”(pg.114). Duncan writes, “If your body and you were married, you would go to jail for domestic violence”(pg.114), she means you would go to jail for treating your body without care if you were married to if by abusing it.
Using tanning beds before the age of 30 increases the risk of getting the deadliest skin cancer (Melanoma) by 59 percent (Hughe, D. 2012).Yet still, there is the question of, “ Should teens be allowed to use tanning beds?”. Tanning has proven to contribute to developing skin cancer, so tanning dramatically increases the chance of developing cancer. Also, the color skin turns from indoor tanning can be quite unnatural and it can be very obvious that the person had gone indoor tanning based on the color of their skin. To add, the conditions of the tanning beds are not as sanitary as people may think. The beds can have all the germs of the people who tanned there before because the beds are not being cleaned regularly.
The Freshman 15 is a thought that crosses the minds of most future college students, but most say that it won’t happen to them. This fear of losing a toned body after graduating high school bothers some more than others. They realize after high school there are no longer athletics, and they’ll no longer be exercising regularly.
