We Need Pennies! Pennies have been around for a long time. They used to be used in the most simplest things, like buying candy. All the young school kids would round up all the pennies they could find to buy penny candy. But that was the past. Look at the present. We are now starting to use credit and debit cards to make most purchases. Pennies have began to become useless. So why do we still need the penny? The United States needs to keep it, because it is a benefit to our society. If we got rid of the penny, prices would have to change. But instead of prices going down, they would all be rounded up. In the long run, we would be spending millions of more dollars a year. In addition, some say it is a waste of money to be producing pennies because they cost twice the amount they are worth, to produce. Over the past years, millions of dollars have been collected in penny drives. Most of the money collected goes to support causes, including cancer. Even though we don’t always donate pennies, it still makes a difference. I have had opportunities to help in a fundraiser like this before. This particular fundraiser, is called” Pennies by the Inch.” This specific fundraiser is where we raise money for Primary Children’s Hospital. When I go and collect donations, I do notice that people don’t always donate pennies. But imagine if we did get rid of the penny. What would we call these types of fundraisers? Quarters by the Inch? Dollars by the inch? See? It just doesn’t seem to have the same meaning or ring to it. The penny in the title kind of “symbolizes” that every cent counts. So it doesn’t matter how much you
