“The lights green, would you like to go?” I find myself saying this more and more while waiting at traffic lights. Talking on the phone (or doing any other distracting task) while driving is a huge pet peeve of mine. Not only is it inconsiderate to other drivers, the inconvenience you case can lead to serious disaster and loss of life. Is your phone call more important that you life and the lives of those around you? Talking on the phone, without a hands free device, should be illegal because preoccupied drivers are distracted, an inconvenience on the road, and a hazard to other drivers and pedestrians. Drivers who talk on the phone are distracted. They just simply can’t focus on the road and their surroundings while simultaneously holding a decent conversation. Their reaction time in both their driving and conversation are greatly diminished and they sound scattered and distant. Their driving is often slow, late, or sporadic. They may almost miss a turn and come to a screeching halt causing other drivers to slam on their brakes. The distractions for a driver are many. Phones, radios, and children can all greatly sidetrack the driver from their number one propriety – driving safely. What is one of the leading causes for death in America? If you said automobile accidents you would be right. With a combination of inexperienced teen drivers, drunk drivers, and distracted social creatures the roads of this country are an unforgiving place. Does it seem smart or even logical to allow these drivers to focus on anything other than the road? Just like when seatbelts were mandated, car accidents greatly decreased. I predict that with a ban on texting/talking on the phone while driving, without a hands free device, will greatly reduce the number of tragic motor vehicle
