Since the early 2000 's, cell phone related car crashes have increased in number. Talking, texting, or merely glancing at a cell phone while being behind the wheel is a dangerous distraction while going 70, 50, or even 20 miles per hour. This is why I think that driving while using a handheld cellphone should be illegal. Talking on a cellphone is just as dangerous as texing, though some motorists would disagree, saying that talking on a cellphone is not as dangerous as texting, but they are very wrong. When a driver is concentrating on a conversation, they pay less attention to what is going on around them in favor of the voice in their ear. Even taking a turn too late could be incredibly lethal. There are many different ways in which a driver can avoid using their phone while on the road. When entering a car the driver should turn off or silence his or her phone and put it in a place that is out of sight so to not to tempt the driver to look at it. If the driver has a passenger, they should give the phone to them. If the passenger has a phone and the driver needs to communicate with someone, the driver could relay their message to the passenger and have them convey the message. Or the driver can just be patient and wait until there is a spot to pullover and use their phones there. There are so many reasons to not be on a cell phone while driving, life or death being the most important reason, but still people continue to use their cellphones while driving. Why? Because they are addicted. People today are so reliant on their phones, they cannot bear to be without them for even a second. It has become almost as bad as alcohol or tobacco and kills just as many. Driving with cellphones is just as bad as driving under the influence of any other drug.
