Driving while using a handheld cell phone should be made illegal. However, driving while using a non handheld phone is not any safer. Using a handheld phone is a major distraction to the driver. It is also one of the leading causes of accidents. Young, inexperienced drivers are more likely to get in an accident because of driving while using a handheld cell phone. Driving while doing anything on a handheld cell phone is one of the biggest distractions to the driver. While texting on the phone the driver is forced to alternate between looking down at their phone and looking at the road. The leading cause of car accidents comes from not being focused on driving, because they are to busy on their cell phone. Sure their are accidents from DUIs but that is more likely to happen later on in the day around night, where as an accident from using a handheld phone can happen anytime of the day. Using a handheld cell phones draws away the drivers attention from the road more than any other distractions. Texting and driving is most likely the leading cause of car accidents, particularly for younger drivers. Furthermore, driving while using a handheld cell phone is the number one reason why young inexperienced drivers get in accidents or cause accidents. A 16 year old that just started driving is more likely to use their cells phone while driving and get in an accident. However, this does not mean a more experienced driver will not get in an accident for the very same reason. It is safe to say that most teenagers will not stop and think of all the potential dangers of using a cell phone while driving, because they will be to excited on the fact that they now are able to drive.
