If you were to ask a room full of seniors in high school how many of them had cell phones, almost every child would raise their hand. Then, if you asked how many had their licenses, a majority would raise their hand again. With teenage drivers, a common concern among parents is texting while driving. However, it is not just teenagers who are guilty of using cell phones while driving; any person with a cell phone, regardless of their age, is most likely guilty of using their phone while driving at least once. Distracted driving results in preventable accidents such as "fender-benders", hitting pedestrians, and even contributes to fatalities in drunk driving incidents. While fender-benders typically are not fatal, they can cause serious injuries like whiplash and concussions, which are especially dangerous if small children are involved. It takes only one glance down at one's phone to miss the person ahead of you slowing, and wreck your car. Because of the clear solution to the issue, not using a cell phone while driving, I agree that phone use while driving should be outlawed. Another accident that can occur from using a cell phone while driving is hitting a pedestrian. This is especially true in neighborhoods where small children may be playing, bicyclists are riding their bikes, and pets may have gotten loose. Because you were hitting send on a text to your friend, you have now hit someone's child, someone's parent, someone's beloved dog. The severity of the accident depends on a variety of factors but overall, the accident will be your fault and you will have to live with the consequences, quite literally paying the price. Some accidents are easily avoided; not using a phone while driving increases your awareness and your safety, so it is clear it should be illegal.
