Does true love exist? Many answer negatively, not for a moment believing in the nonexistent fantasy. However, others believe strongly in the alluring twinning of two fates, a perfect love in which no one gives and everyone gains. Yet, love on its own still confuses a person, a concept with as many complex forms as stars in the sky. The different themes of “The Gift of the Magi” and “The Necklace” show a few of the many forms of love. While “The Gift of the Magi” talks about romantic love and the mistakes of those blinded by it, the theme of “The Necklace” delves deeper and talks about a person 's own desire. Yet the stories share a general theme about love and and conclude with the protagonists finding happiness despite their mistakes.
The first and more traditional story, “The Gift of the Magi,” centers around classic, romantic love. The story revolves around how love results in foolish mistakes. Despite their poverty, the main protagonists, Jim and Della, owned a few things in which “...they both took a mighty pride. One was Jim’s gold watch… ” (Henry 43). No matter the extent of the couple’s poverty, they alway held onto their treasure, the watch, or so one would think. The importance of Jim’s watch stretches beyond its aesthetic appeal. The watch carried sentimental value. The story states that the watch… “had been [Jim’s] father’s and his grandfather’s” before him (Henry 44).
