Safe But Subtle Do you feel like every time you turn on the news there is always something going on at schools? Whether it be school shootings or kids fighting. What if there was a way to fix all these problems? Having an armed guard could be a solution. By October 10, 2015 there had been 52 school shootings in 2015 alone. Schools would be much safer if there was an armed guard patrolling because the guard would be watching constantly, it would prevent crime from happening inside the school, and crime happening at school from outside the school. First, schools would be watched constantly. According to the latest available data from the National center for Education Statistics, released in 2011, 85 percent of public schools reported one or more acts of assaults, theft, rape, or other offenses. School safety officers can be expected to intervene in all kinds of cases.The National Association of School resource officers training courses include basic instructions for those newly assigned to schools. The instructions cover interviewing, identifying deceptive verbal and written communication from unruly students, and steps to take when a threat requires a school lockdown. In bigger schools some kids have their own slang to communicate with their peers about things that maybe against school rules or even the law. School resource officers are trained to figure out what these slang words may mean. School Resource Officers are also trained to interview students. For example if there was a drug bust, SRO’s could interview a student and use tactics that work for students rather than a police officer who typically works with adults or a counselor who normally is not trained to interview.
