Academic cheating is not new to our school system, students have been cheating for as long as anyone can remember. Victor Dorff a teacher at a charter high school in california states that “Cheating was, is and probably always will be a fact of life”. Common sense seems to dictate that academic cheating is prevalent as ever in high schools and colleges”. But teachers all over The United States try to teach and encourage students not to cheat, but cheating is considered to be the easiest and fastest way to finish your homework. Teachers need to change their teaching styles try to minimize the access to technology during tests, as well as drawing lines with students and teaching what cheating is and how to avoid it and what the consequences if caught cheating. …show more content…
Cheating is so common, that most students have either cheated themselves or know someone who has. In Dorff’s article America must address culture of cheating in and out of schools, he tells a story of a class that he taught twice a day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. A student in his morning class completed a test and after the test ended and the class was over, he gave the answers to one of the students who had Dorff’s class in the afternoon. When Dorff confronted the students about this, neither student understood why what they did was cheating. They thought they were clever and used the resources that were provided. Dorff called the parents of one of the students to talk about the incident, and again the parents did not know why it was considered cheating. A lot of students also believe that if you copy someone else’s work who is in your class that they are not cheating because the student is not a published author. Cheating has many different forms.
