Death is all around us. Every day, hundreds of thousands of people die of many causes, and many times, these deaths are avertible. This is the case when it comes to alcohol and drug-induced deaths. Every year, 120,000 people die of alcohol and drug-related causes in the United States alone, and there is absolutely no reason for this. With my father being an alcoholic, this is an issue that is very important to me, and I plan to work to stop these avoidable deaths from occurring. I have witnessed how alcoholism can tear a family apart in person, and it is not something I would wish upon my worst enemy. It is an unforgiving disease that keeps on taking unless controlled, and controlling it is an uphill battle. With my plan to go into the medical field, and to major in chemistry at Ohio State, I hope to make a medication that is more effective in helping addicts stay drug-free. The current medications that exist for these diseases either replace an addictive drug with another addictive drug, or they cause terrible side effects when the addict relapses. I plan to make a better alternative so that it is not a situation where the addict learns through terrible side-effects, or has to take an addictive drug to rid them from their previous addiction, but rather causes them to not have a craving for the narcotic. In order to do this, I would need to learn much more about chemistry and the effects of narcotics, and Ohio State will hopefully be the place where I can enrich my knowledge of these topics.
