“Ismene, I am going to bury him”(Sophocles pg). The story of Antigone, written by Sophocles, all starts out, when Antigone states she is going to bury her dead brother. She shows the readers what it is like to stick up for what you believe in and what is right. Antigone shows that no matter what the consequences, you should always stick to your own beliefs. Similar to this story, two articles about school dress codes and an oil pipeline debate also show the same concept displayed in Antigone. Together, these stories show that your beliefs top all, even the law sometimes. A question then comes as to when is it right to protest against the law? Antigone feels that it is the right thing to do because, in her religion, if someone is not given the proper burial ceremony, they will not go to heaven. By burying her brother, Antigone is breaking the law. However, she is doing it because she believes it is the right thing regarding her religion. Similar to Antigone, students have been protesting their school’s dress code. In the article “Students Protest Growing Over Gender-Equal Dress Codes”, Rose Lynn, a student in Oklahoma, decided to wear something she knew would go against dress code. Gabrielle Sorto states, “Rose Lynn scribbled on her shirt what a school administrator told her when she was sent home for violating dress code. ‘It doesn't cover your crotch,’ her shirt read. ‘You'll distract the boys” (1). Rose believed that it was unfair for girls to be dress coded for things boys were not. When she decided to wear that shirt, she was not only following her beliefs, but she also wanted to make a statement to others saying that dress codes are not okay. Rose had stood up for her what she believed in just like Antigone did. Furthermore, at the end of Antigone, Creon is sentencing her to death. However, Antigone is now trying to
