Armenian Genocide
In 1978 Jimmy Carter gave a speech at a White House ceremony and said, “It is generally not known in the world that, in the years preceding 1916, there was a concerted effort made to eliminate all the Armenian people… And there weren’t any Numberg trials.” For being one of the largest genocides in history, many people have little knowledge and/or awareness of the Armenian Genocide and of those that do, only a handful will admit to the killings as genocide. The mass killing of the Armenian population should be considered genocide because of the cruelty and dehumanization used to rid of the people.
The World in Denial
On April 24 1915, the Ottoman government devised and fulfilled their plan to liberate their country of Armenians. Nearly 100 years later and only recently have countries started to recognize this as genocide, even the country that committed these murders denies the fact that is was genocide (Beecroft). Turkey is an important ally to many countries, including the US and many cannot afford to lose them as an ally (“Armenian Genocide”). The government of Turkey has threatened to remove ambassadors and deny US access to its military bases (de Waal). Both of these conflicts are examples of how Turkey has tried to silence the world and limit the use of the word “genocide”.
