In the online world, 60 out of every 100 people get catfished. Catfishing is a term mostly used online. Catfishing means creating a fake profile to obscure their identity online on any social media website such as Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram to lure someone into what is usually a romantic relationship. Catfishing is a much bigger problem than a lot of people think it is. Not only can it cause emotional damage to someone who falls into their trap, but it is also very dangerous if it is taken to a level such as meeting your online admirer. I think people should absolutely not be allowed to hide who they really are online. You think you’re talking to the really nice, cute, and smart guy who lives two states over from you, when really you could be talking to a registered sex offender who lives two streets down. You never really know until you actually meet the person face to face, in which then many more dangers arise. There are countless of events where people go to meet their online friend, lover, or what they hope to be their lover and they meet someone who is completely different. Someone who has opposite intentions then they ever had. People can get raped, stabbed, beaten, kidnapped, or even in some of the worst cases, killed. Not only do people come in contact with sexual predators, but scammers, blackmailers, liars, and even thieves. Many people seem to overlook those because you mostly hear about cases such as “Young girl goes to meet online boyfriend, and was raped by a 38 year old man.” and so forth and so on.
