Concussions are a growing concern in sports such as football and hockey (Westhead, 2018). Although the National Football League (NFL) has put money towards funding concussion research, the National Hockey League (NHL) has not made any moves towards funding research, against the pitches in favor of it (Westhead, 2018). Further concussion research would be valuable for sport policy as well as the prevention and rehabilitation of concussion injuries (Westhead, 2018). Refusal to fund this research is preventing the gaining of this valuable knowledge, therefore putting the athletes at risk and in a position lacking of power. New knowledge on concussions would influence the physical culture of hockey, helping athletes and other professionals to adapt how, when, and why they do things. …show more content…

I believe it is unethical to place athletes, coaches, and health professionals in a position in which they lack the knowledge to help combat concussion injuries, especially for a sport that relies on the participation of all these people and would not exist without them. The NHL’s livelihood relies on the athletes, just as the athletes rely on the NHL. It is because of this that the NHL should try to care for the individuals who are involved in hockey. The NHL should value their athletes enough to care about their safety and to go to great lengths to determine how they can be as safe as possible in this dangerous sport. Even if the NHL does not inherently care about the health and safety of their athletes, and purely cares about making money, there is still value in funding this concussion research. The NHL cannot purely focus on keeping all money to themselves; they must give some back into the health of the athletes, because without the health of the athletes, they would cease to make
