Society puts labels on what is normal and what is not, what emotions you should feel, and which you shouldn't. The merriam-webster's dictionary defines the word “human” as the “of, relating to, or characteristic of humans”. In the novel “Frankenstein” by Gris Grimly, the two main characters, Victor Frankenstein and his Creation both face hardships. In the novel, Victor decides to construct a being to bring back to life, which later then becomes the Creature. At the end of the novel, a question is brought to the minds of the readers: who is more human, the Creature or Victor? For the entire duration of the novel, Victor has a mutual connection with his friends and family and he has burning love for all of them. Within the novel it says, “I grasped Henry Clerval’s hand, and in a moment forgot my horror and misfortune; I felt suddenly, and for the first time during many months, calm and serene joy(page 47)”. Henry Clerval is Victor’s childhood best friend and he means a great deal to Victor. This quote shows that when Victor is with his loved ones, he loses all feelings of his fears, and he feels joy and passion. In addition, in the text it also says, “I confess to you, my cousin, that I love you, and that in my airy dreams of futurity you have been my constant friend and companion. But it is your happiness I desire…(page 158)”. This additionally shows that Victor is loved since his cousin Elizabeth who he would eventually wed, confessed her love for him and only wishes for Victor to be Content. To further contribute, in the novel it states, “I cannot describe to you the uneasiness we have all felt concerning your health(page 51)”. This quote demonstrates how Victor is loved since his family is deeply concerned for him and his well-being.
