Homosexuality is a polemic topic that people are either supporting it, or against it. As years go by, the term “marriage” has been evolving continuously in its meaning. The change in people’s attitude and mindset reconstructed the definition, allowing people to be more open-minded about basic human right – love. It is clear that even though same-sex marriage has gained a foothold across the world, Singapore still lags behind. Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong recently commented that Singapore is not ready for same sex marriage as “the society is basically a conservative one” (Wong, 2015). However, according to the United Nation Human Rights, “human rights are rights inherent to all human beings, whatever our nationality, place of residence, sex, national or ethnic, origin, color, religion, language, or any other status (What are human rights, 2015).” Everyone should have the same right and freedom to do whatever he or she wants without discrimination. The LGBT community does not have the same rights as straights; and are consistently denied the rights of matrimony just because of their sexual orientation. Gays and lesbians contributes to the society is many different ways – financially, socially, politically, culturally and etc. – just like how a normal citizen would; and they deserve to be respected. During this year’s Pink Dot event, it hits the record of more than 28,000 people turning up to advocate their support for LGBT in Singapore (Shen, 2015). This clearly shows that the number of supporters is growing and is embracing the idea of homosexuality. However, everyone should be awarded rights in the society regardless of their sexual orientation. At the Global Entrepreneurship Summit in Africa, President Barack Obama mentioned, “When you start treating people differently, not because of any harm they’re doing to anybody, but because they are different, that’s the path whereby freedoms begin to erode and bad things happen” (Obama promotes equality, 2015). Same-sex marriage does no harm to anyone. It may even enhance the lives of people in the country.
