Since the 1960s, gun ownership has declined in the US. Which has caused the firearm homicides to drop also.The correlation of these two aspects, creates a compelling result that should raise awareness to the fact of the matter. Gun laws in the United States should be more contained. To accomplish results, our country needs to reconsider and change how we regulate firearms in the hands of the population. As of now anyone can buy and own a gun at the minimum age of 18 or 21, depending on the type. There is a required background check when buying a gun (legally) but it is not in depth enough to raise suspicion of possible psychological factors that could cause the weapon to be used for a wrong purpose. A test, similar to the object of a polygraph, should be given when a person wishes to purchase a firearm. Following the psychological evaluation should be a mandatory class for those who want to continue the process of getting a gun. With the rising awareness of the negative consequences with the possession of guns, people will learn to handle them more carefully because of their …show more content…

Only 442 homicides using firearms were committed in 2011 and this sharp distinction is due to strict Japanese laws that limit civilian access to guns. To merely own a gun, civilians must complete safety and informational classes and only civilian scientists conducting research may own a firearm.The United States has less strict purchasing requirements; only a background check is needed, provided that you are 18 years of age or older. Because of their training through mandatory classes, the Japanese understand how guns operate and their potential lethality better than most citizens in the United States. The rate for accidental shootings and injuries related to guns decreases because those who own a gun have proven that they can use them properly and understand the consequences of their actions in the likeness of gun misuse.
