I believe that immigration is one of the most serious domestic affairs that the United States is dealing with right now. There has been tension throughout the history of the United States over immigrants from other countries. Whether it was legal or illegal immigration, there has been tension over people coming here for a very long time. At one time Germans, Asians, Irish, etc., faced discrimination and violence for coming here. Now Hispanic and Middle Eastern immigrants seem to be the target of violence and discrimination. The border between the United States and Mexico has been an issue for some time because of how long it is and how hard it is to keep it secure from people sneaking into the country. The number of undocumented immigrants being arrested has started to rise also, which has led to fear of who might be targeted next. Some of those arrested are people that have lived in the United States for years that have been active members of their communities and have started their families here. Many of those arrested have criminal backgrounds, but not all of them do. Even though they did come here illegally or stayed after a visa expired, some of them have worked hard, started families, haven’t broken the law and have been active members of their communities. In those cases, some argue that they should be an exception and allowed to stay in the United States. Some Americans have no problem with one ethnic group, but do have a problem with another one. There is no easy answer for how to handle immigration, legal or otherwise. Our borders do need to be protected from people coming here illegally, because you don’t know who might be coming across and what their plan is. The problem is how to do it effectively. A wall is an expensive undertaking and it will still need to be monitored by Border
