Just Keep Swimming Opening statement Despite the measure of students attending universities and/or community colleges in America, these students are organized in one of three categories describing their academic success- sinking, treading water, or swimming. In uncomplicated terms, the student is either failing, performing at an average rate of success, or soaring through their academic experience. Opening sentence. Statistics conclude that 30 percent of college freshmen drop out ensuing their first year of college. An infinite magnitude of reasons exists resulting in a student dropping out of college. These students are classified as the “sinkers”. Being classified as a “sinker” does not necessarily mean that the student is not pushing themselves to their personal limits; it could frankly imply that college is not in the student’s best interests. A plethora of students fail college due to the fact that they crave the independence all 18 year olds enjoy while attending school. This group of students do not discern that receiving a higher education requires effort, inside of the classroom, and that the experience is vastly more than the parties and the independence. It is not an uncommon occurrence to discover that many students dedicate a majority of their time focusing on education. Many students spend hours a night studying. So, why is it that these students are only passing with average grades? Perhaps it is the grading system. Perhaps it is the student is a poor test taker. Or perhaps the student is too tired to focus on the material presented to them when test time
