One of the most controversial topics of today in America is the legalization of medicinal marijuana, with twenty-three states plus the District of Columbia having already legalized it the support continues to increase. With the increasing support for the legalization of medical marijuana over the last few years, the risks are being overlooked much more often. The use of medical marijuana does have many benefits that can help with various illnesses, but the health risks that it causes outweigh the benefits. The upcoming ballot for the state of Florida will include the Amendment for the legalization of medicinal marijuana. Which brings up the question whether or not it should be legalized. With the medical risks and the availability of more effective alternative medications, medical marijuana should not be legalized in the state of Florida.
It cannot be denied that medical marijuana does have many benefits to help patients with various illnesses like glaucoma and chemotherapy. The use of marijuana increases heart rate and blood pressure of the patients that use it. The FDA has not approved the use of marijuana because it has not found any product from botanical marijuana to be safe or beneficial for any illnesses or conditions. What the FDA has approved are certain synthetic ingredients that are found in marijuana that are helpful for various diseases. The study on marijuana is greatly restricted, so there are many unknown effects of marijuana to patients. The lack of evidence known about cannabis puts all patients at risk of not knowing all the side effects that might occur with the use of the cannabis.
